This is a view of Front Street (The Main Road). From this view you can see the School and the School House, the Butchers Shop come Off Licence which was run by Mr David Lawton at the time of this photo. At the side of the shop you will also see the entrance to Top Street. When this photo was taken a lot of the houses had been bricked up as the colliery was shut and only about 20 houses remained occupied. The iron railings that can be seen here can still be seen in exactly the same place today, they are just a little covered up by hedgerows. The photographer when taking this photo was stood on ground, which is now, a field used for grazing cattle. You can also see that in front of him is a dirt trail, this is where the colliery train lines once were. They were taken up once the colliery closed. All that remains of this scene today is the
School House, which is now a residential property and the ruins of the School,
which is in need of enormous repair. It seems such a shame that a once thriving part of
the community is in such a state of disrepair.
