There were 2 railways at Leycett ,there was the colliery line which was mainly used to transport the coal tubs down to the old wharf in Madeley,and also to use within the colliery grounds for shunting and the like.
Then there were the main public train lines which ran through Leycett.The station & platform were close to the entrance of the colliery and can be seen below.
In later years the wooden station waiting room was commonly known as 'The Station Hotel',duely named because it had a permanant resident - Smash (Fred Watson).He lived there for several years and could quite often be seen on the last bus from Newcastle singing his way home after a few drinks.In fact if you look closely you may be able to see Smash on one of the pictures below ,please excuse the quality of the picture as it is a photocopy of a newspaper clipping..
